Publisher Hooded Horse and developer Eremite Games have a lot to celebrate as their dark fantasy roguelite survival city builder, Against the Storm, has sold over 1 million copies.
Having first launched in Early Access on Epic Games Store in October 2021, Against the Storm, went to release on Steam and GOG in early November 2022. During the game’s Early Access development phase, the player community helped shape the final product such as the community vote to determine the fifth species added to the game. Out of the choices of frogs, bats, and foxes, the community voted for foxes. On December 8, 2023, the game left Early Access and then at the 27th D.I.C.E. awards the game received a nomination in the “Best Strategy/Simulation Game” category.
At the start of this March, the developer released the 1.2 patch update. Blight Post upgrades, new dialogue options, and a new Trends panel were the core features of the patch. This update was first teased on the developer’s 2024 roadmap for the game.
Last week during GDC 2024 the Against the Storm game lead, Michał Ogłoziński, gave a postmortem talk. The hour-long discussion covered how the game came to life including the mixing of seemingly incompatible genres, incorporating player feedback, and alternative methods of managing an indie studio.
We find it incredibly reassuring that even such a small and relatively unknown studio like ours can thrive on Steam. Treating players with respect and listening to their feedback has been an integral part of Against the Storm’s success.

Looking to the future, a free 1.3 patch update is on the horizon. Details about the 1.3 update have yet to be announced. Beyond the update is a planned DLC which will include a new playable species, new biome, new buildings, new events, new perks, and new orders. More information regarding the specifics of the Against the Storm DLC will be revealed at a later date.

Against the Storm is available on Windows PC via Humble Bundle, Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store for $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99 / ¥3,980. The game is also available on the Microsoft Store for PC Game Pass.
In addition to English, localizations are available in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Ukrainian, Turkish, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Thai, Korean, and Japanese.
The Against the Storm Supporter Pack has been updated to include a new 4K wallpaper and all of the World Event artwork. This add-on pack is available from Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store for $9.99.
