Bolverk Games are preparing to head to the south pole with the October launch of their FPS VR adventure Genotype.
Late last month the developer began accepting Genotype pre-orders on the Meta Quest platform with a limited-time discount. At the time of the pre-order announcement Bo Bennekov, Bolverk Games CEO, said “This is our most ambitious game yet” and wanted to deliver a “top-tier” game. Genotype is the studio’s fifth VR game since 2015 making the developer a part of the evolution of VR genre since the early days.
We are supremely excited to have come this far. Genotype is our biggest project yet, and I think it shows in its quality and feel. Now that we’re launching on October 12, we’re all beginning to feel the tingling of excitement.Bo Bennekov, CEO at Bolverk Games
From the beginning of Genotype‘s development, the developer was determined to make the most of Quest 2’s technical abilities. Even though the game is a standalone title, the FPS adventure features high-fidelity graphics pushing the limits of the platform.
We decided early on, that we wanted to push the boundaries for graphics performance on the Quest 2. That meant implementing a lot of custom solutions on top of Unity, like, for example, implementing a completely custom lighting/shading system. The end result is good enough that all our teaser and trailer material is recorded real-time, directly in-engine with a special motion stabilized camera and virtually no post-processing.Lasse Tassing, CTO at Bolverk Games
The game also features a fully-voiced story composed by the accomplished video game writer Morten Bruunbjerg (Hi-Fi Rush, Voice Attorney). A pre-order trailer for Genotype, viewable below, gives a taste of the game world via Evely, the GRAID, hostile creatures, William, and general gameplay tone.
Explore and escape from an Antarctic research base overrun by monstrous alien beasts. Play as Evely, an intern at an Antarctic weather station who after a routine expedition is dropped into the middle of the mysterious Snowdrop Initiative Laboratories. The facility’s only human survivor, William, guides her to safety while also possibly saving the entire planet.
To survive, Evely is dependent of the use GRAID, an experimental set of gloves. The GRAID can be used to print creatures and modify their DNA. Further exploration of the facility will uncover new ways to print other types of creatures or a methods enhance creatures by modifying and upgrading their DNA.
Adaptation is key to surviving in the hostile monster-filled facility. Transform into other creatures and unlock otherwise inaccessible spaces in the facility. Clear the path forward, using creatures as tools, for deeper exploration into the laboratories. Fight through the maze-like ecosystem, take on the hostile alien threat known as The Mother, and even possibly save the world.
Genotype has a confirmed launch date set for October 12, 2023 on the Meta Quest platform at the price of $34.99. Pre-orders with a limited-time discount of 14%, setting the price at $29.99, are available before the October 2023 release.
