Weekly Rewind: May 9, 2020

Welcome to the Nano Gaming News Weekly Rewind for May 9, 2020 where we cover stories and events that we missed over the past week.

Last Wednesday indie publisher Katnappe and developer Genius Slackers announced a July release for their upcoming psychological thriller What Happened. This past Thursday was filled with press releases one of two that we noticed, but didn’t get a chance to cover was the revealing of The Medium, a psychological horror game from Bloober Team. Whereas the other we dodged was the reveal of OddBallers, a multiplayer dodgeball game from Game Swing.

For those that missed some of our other stories, here is a quick recap of a few of stories NGN covered this past week. Terraforming Earth from Lost Robots and Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic from 3DIVISION both received major content updates. The End of the Sun kicked off their Kickstarter while Close to the Sun from Storm in a Teacup and Wired Productions landed on Steam. Lastly the puzzle adventure Ourea has a beta, a release date and a new trailer.

The Medium Official Reveal with Gameplay | Bloober Team

The Medium Official Reveal

Bloober Team, the developer of Blair Witch, Observer and Layers of Fear, announced on Thursday its largest and most ambitious project yet, The Medium. Coming to Xbox Series X and PC during the 2020 holiday season, this game will mess with one’s perception of reality.

The tension-fueled psychological horror is built around a central idea that shows how one’s perspective changes with their perception. As Marianne, players find themselves as a medium who is hounded by visions. Living and interacting across two worlds, the real and the spiritual, players quickly learn that nothing is as it seems and every coin has two sides. Truth is never simple and the more one can perceive the more complicated it becomes.

Every one of our games has a central theme that drives its creative and technological design. In The Medium, we focus on perspective and perception. When you change your point of view, you discover that things are more complicated and nuanced than you initially thought. The Medium is our most ambitious game ever and we can’t wait to show you how we’re translating this vision into a psychological horror.

Piotr Babieno, CEO, Bloober Team

The Medium is scheduled for a holiday 2020 release on PC and the Xbox Series X. More information about the game can be found on its website at themediumgame.com or follow @TheMediumGame on Twitter.

OddBallers Reveal Trailer | Game Swing

OddBallers Multiplayer Dodgeball Reveal

Last Thursday, Danish developer Game Swing gave the world a reason to practice social distancing with the reveal of OddBallers a multiplayer dodgeball experience.

Presented as a fast and frantic party game for up to six players, friends and family can play side-by-side or online. Using skill, wits and unfair tactics one can mess with their opponents is extremely unpredictable and hilarious fashion. Each round presents a crazy type of dodgeball that is simple, but contains all the complexity and depth that comes with strategy. Objects, mechanics and the environment create fun and inventive ways which one can engage their opponents for their highlight reels.

So many studios are emphasizing competition. We try to celebrate the communal experience over individual competitive achievements… Some of our fondest memories are from video games with a festive and quirky attitude like Worms, Diddy Kong Racing and obscure Warcraft 3 maps – these are the type of moments we hope players will experience.

Martin Kai Sommer, Producer, OddBallers

The cancellation of all gaming events both big and small, forced Game Swing to change their game plan for getting OddBallers ready. Normally these events are used to secure some external funding and sometimes find a publisher, however luckily the government passed some initiatives to help support businesses during the lockdown which is helping Game Swing with self-publishing.

OddBallers is set for a late 2020 early access release on Steam. Beta testing is expected to begin in the near future. More information about the game can be found at oddballersgame.com or by following @OddBallersGame on Twitter.
