Fans of innovative indie games can now sink their teeth into Hungry Horrors, a culinary roguelite deckbuilder developed and published by United Kingdom-based Clumsy Bear Studio. The game’s first playable demo is now available on Steam, offering players a taste of its unique blend of strategic card gameplay, retro pixel art, and a delightfully twisted premise: cook traditional British and Irish dishes to appease legendary monsters or become their next meal.
In Hungry Horrors, players take on the role of a princess tasked with satisfying the appetites of iconic folklore fiends like Jenny Greenteeth, Dullahan, and Glaistig. This demo introduces two handcrafted biomes, six monstrous guests, two boss fights, and four NPCs, alongside non-combat areas like the Nook, Trove, and Vendor.
Gameplay swaps traditional combat for a creative twist—build your deck with dishes, spices, and utensils to match each creature’s culinary preferences. The demo also showcases a variety of authentic recipes, such as Bara Brith and Cranachan, and is brought to life with vibrant 2D pixel art and an original whimsical soundtrack by composer Henry Taylor. Clumsy Bear Studio promises regular updates to the demo as development continues toward the full release.
The full version of Hungry Horrors will expand the experience to at least ten biomes with new monsters, bosses, NPCs, and a broader menu of dishes. Blending gothic camp and British humor with roguelite progression, the full release will feature a fully fleshed-out storyline that culminates in an epic dragon showdown.
