Gearbox Publishing and developer Norsfell released their Viking survival RPG Tribes of Midgard on both PC and PlayStation. A Standard Edition and a Deluxe Edition with platform-exclusive items is available.
Players can opt to play solo or in a team as they fight to survive. In fact survival is dependent upon the group’s cohesiveness rather than the individual. Only by working together will the tribe be successful in protecting the sacred Seed of Yggdrasil located at the village’s center. If the seed is destroyed, the game is over as the world ends with Ragnarök. As a might Viking warrior, an Einherjar, who was brought down from Valhalla, players must do what it takes to thrive in Midgard.
We created Tribes of Midgard to offer players both cooperative and solo experiences where they can live their own myths and legends. Stories worthy of being told around the campfire, just like the Vikings. We can’t wait to hear about the community’s own tall-tales from adventuring in Tribes of Midgard!Julian Maroda, CEO and Creative Director at Norsfell
The game features a bright and colorful procedurally generated world. This enables players to have endless opportunities to explore its areas while creating their own replayable Viking adventure.
There are two game modes: Saga and Survival. In Saga Mode players must complete a series of quests to unlock the final boss for the Season. In Season 1 the fight is against Fenrir. If Fenrir isn’t defeated in time the world will freeze over in Fimbulwinter. This mode contains special rewards and will be updated with seasonal Saga bosses, quests, rewards, and more. Seasonal updates will be free.
Survival Mode is all about keeping the Seed of Yggdrasil alive as long as possible against a steady flow of enemies. Players have control over the game’s settings such as difficulty and size. The more challenging the settings, the more XP will be earned.
As a mix of survival and RPG the game allows players to explore and craft legendary gear from the resources they collect. There are a eight different classes for players to progress that offer unique means of taking on enemies. An additional 30 Rune modifiers offer a range of abilities and status buffs that will alter gameplay. To explore the world, players can create bridges, ramps, and walls. Fortifications can be built to the village against attacks and even help defend against Jötnar, who are giants that attack every few days.
