Bolverk Games are preparing to head to the south pole with the October launch of their FPS VR adventure Genotype.
Late last month the developer began accepting Genotype pre-orders on the Meta Quest platform with a limited-time discount. At the time of the pre-order announcement Bo Bennekov, Bolverk Games CEO, said “This is our most ambitious game yet” and wanted to deliver a “top-tier” game. Genotype is the studio’s fifth VR game since 2015 making the developer a part of the evolution of VR genre since the early days.
We are supremely excited to have come this far. Genotype is our biggest project yet, and I think it shows in its quality and feel. Now that we’re launching on October 12, we’re all beginning to feel the tingling of excitement.
Bo Bennekov, CEO at Bolverk Games
From the beginning of Genotype‘s development, the developer was determined to make the most of Quest 2’s technical abilities. Even though the game is a standalone title, the FPS adventure features high-fidelity graphics pushing the limits of the platform.
We decided early on, that we wanted to push the boundaries for graphics performance on the Quest 2. That meant implementing a lot of custom solutions on top of Unity, like, for example, implementing a completely custom lighting/shading system. The end result is good enough that all our teaser and trailer material is recorded real-time, directly in-engine with a special motion stabilized camera and virtually no post-processing.

The game also features a fully-voiced story composed by the accomplished video game writer Morten Bruunbjerg (Hi-Fi Rush, Voice Attorney). A pre-order trailer for Genotype, viewable below, gives a taste of the game world via Evely, the GRAID, hostile creatures, William, and general gameplay tone.
