Team17 along with London-based Tributary Games announced that the narrative-driven multiplayer game, King of the Castle, is heading to PC in 2023. Players will be able to use their Twitch accounts to work with others and guide the fate of their kingdom.
Set in a fictional fantasy kingdom, players will take up the mantle of Monarch or one of their Council of Nobles hailing from one of the game’s five unique regions. Each story requires both the Monarch and Nobles to work together flippant world of fantasy and political intrigue. With often hilarious consequences, players will attempt to steer the fate of an unstable empire.
The role of Monarch is assigned to the game’s host. This player will work through a series of mini storylines filled with unique challenges with often far reach consequences. Monarchs can choose peace or not. As the Monarch, players will need to balance the competing demands from Nobles, watch out for political unrest or revolts, use whatever means necessary to survive difficult votes, and ensure a lasting legacy for their empire.
King of the Castle is not just a unique game breaking new ground in social storytelling, it’s also our debut game as a studio, so we’re utterly focused on getting it right. Team17 has an illustrious history of helping small teams to deliver games that reach a lofty standard of quality and polish without compromising on their core premise. That’s immensely important to us, and it was clear from the outset that Team17 understood that and had the resources to help us focus on development and realise the game’s full potential.
Samuel Partridge, Development Lead, Tributary Games
In King of the Castle, players will be able to use Twitch chat to play the game. Nobles will use words as weapons. At the beginning of each game, players are assigned a unique homeland and can voice their thoughts via Twitch chat. They can use chat to discuss dilemmas faced by the crown, plan not-so-secret uprisings, and vote on key decisions that will be determined by the Monarch to have any impact or legitimacy.
Web browser mode allows for a small party of 4 to 21 players to play together. Only the King of the Castle host will need to own a copy of the game. Everyone else can join in on the story and fun using their mobile device or web browser via a unique access code.
We’re thrilled to be working with Tributary Games on King of the Castle. The game’s unique, social take on storytelling really appealed to us and we look forward to helping the team deliver players a one-of-a-kind multiplayer experience on PC in 2023.
