Firefly Studios released another major update to their castle sim RTS Stronghold: Warlords and a new paid The Mongol Empire Campaign DLC. Three new maps and the game’s second AI opponent are available in the free v1.6 update.
Players want loads of unique, larger than life AI characters to do battle with in Stronghold and Kublai Khan was ideal for the game. This infamous Mongol Khagan has been on our wish list for some time now and he should, combined with AI improvements and harder difficulty settings, give veteran Stronghold players a run for their money. We love researching and bringing these characters to life, so we’re looking forward to hearing what the community thinks of Genghis’ grandson!
Nick Tannahill, Marketing Director at Firefly Studios
In The Mongol Empire Campaign players start with the Siege of Wuhan and fight their way through tales of civil war, skirmishes against the Song Dynasty. The separate paid DLC also offers six new missions. From the Siege of Dali in 1253 to the establishment of the Yuan Dynasty, the DLC chronicles Kublai Khan’s infamous exploits in mainland China. This campaign brings an exciting chapter of Mongolian military history to life while still testing the fortitude of veteran players.
Along with the new campaign are two new completely controllable AI warlords that are playable in skirmish mode and online multiplayer. The Monkey Warlord is all about surprising enemies with unpredictable tactics and sudden castle breaches. Upon capture this warlord can mimic other warlord abilities by randomly choosing his new perk at random from other warlords on the map. This perk resets each time a Monkey is captured. Players can easily reroll for an ideal perk through recapture. Monkey Warlord’s edict command provides wood shipments to boos the economy and will send auxiliary units to harass the enemy. The Laddermen edict acts as a relief force allowing players to deploy a squad of units near enemy castles and quickly climb into the enemy’s ramparts.
The Peacock Warlord is the second new AI warlord. This warlord is all about keeping up their appearances which boosts the economy and popularity. Clothing popularity is gained with this warlord’s perk that gives the villagers some of the finest attire in the land. Precious silks can be donated by this warlord to support production of fine clothing that boosts popularity and allows for lucrative high taxes. Gold shipments are also another option which players can use for those expensive castle defenses or Military Academy units. In a pinch the Peacock Warlord can offer Imperial Bannermen as a relief force that can increase the survivability of existing army through boosted morale.
For the base game players gain the Kublai Khan AI as an opponent for free. All the new updates bring the total number of maps in Stronghold: Warlords to 23 across skirmish mode, multiplayer and free build sandbox. In addition there are over 400 player-created maps available on the Steam Workshop.
