Irish indie game developer Squid Monkey Studios released their top-down survival dungeon crawler, The Caretaker on PC through Steam. The game features a mix of blood spatter, action, and puzzles in an accidental apocalypse setting.
Surviving the aftermath of a sabotaged research power facility is everything. This modern day disaster has caused the inhabitants of the small city of Red Chapel to become horribly mutated. The city lays in total waste and now it is up to players to fight their way through roaming hoards of hideous creatures looking to devour anything left alive.
Escape is dependent upon how well the player can explore and manage the items they find. Uncovering hidden items can help remove obstacles and decipher interactive puzzles. The Caretaker takes players on a journey that explores human ignorance, regret and pride as the plot unfolds through the lives of the fallen victims and failed experiments.
I’ve always loved the Survival Horror Genre, but most games are in third or first person. I wanted to experience the same thrill from a new point of view. I played with the idea of blending it with a top-down style of gameplay and found that the blend was received rather well. The narrative was inspired from exaggerating heavily on my own personal experiences. I really wanted to tell a story that showed the cause and affect of someone’s arrogance and ambition.

Developed with the Unity Engine, The Caretaker features top-down low poly violence and occasional gore. The world is full of apocalyptic scenes of burning objects and overturned cars on city streets, alleyways, yards, buildings, and sewers one would expect to see in a zombie-like survival scenario.
The Caretaker is available on Windows PC through Steam for $9.99 USD. A 10% off launch promotion is available until May 7, 2021 on Steam. For more information about The Caretaker visit the game’s page on the developer’s website here.
