The Fortnite patch v5.40 has landed. The patch notes start with “Beware the shadows,” which has a double meaning. In the v5.40 update, the Fortnite team at Epic is giving players a Suppressed Assault Riffle in the Battle Royal mode. However, at the same time, the Drum Gun has been vaulted with little warning.
The Drum Gun has been the target of much debate in the community. A quick search on Reddit and one can see the polarizing love or hate relationship the gun has with players. An often repeated complain is how fast the gun would tear down builds. There are even suggestions on changes for the Drum Gun. Some suggest changing accuracy, while others ask for a lower fire rate. One Redditor even suggested riot shields as a means of defense against SMG and Drum Gun spam.
So far at the time of this post, the Fortnite team at Epic has added no additional reason behind their decision to vault the gun.
The second big part of weapon changes in the v5.40 patch is the addition of the Suppressed Assault Riffle. According to the patch notes, it is a “Sneaky weapon that rewards trigger discipline with precision.” The gun can be found in vending machines, floor loot, treasure chests, and supply drops. It is available in epic and legendary with 32/33 damage per shot.
Until Fortnite brings the Drum Gun back from the vault players will have to be content using the minigun or other powerful guns to quickly tear down builds. As for this player, you can find me lurking in the shadows with my shiny Suppressed Assault Riffle.
