Gearbox Publishing and developer Norsfell have announced a release date for their Viking survival RPG Tribes of Midgard. In addition pre-orders are available for both PC and PlayStation consoles ahead of the July release date.
Set in a colorful world full of ancient Norse, Tribes of Midgard takes players on a hack and slash journey through monsters and Jötnar also known as giants. In order to thrive in the wilderness, players will collect the resources necessary to defend their village from nightly invasions of Helthings.
The story of the game takes place in Midgard or what is known as Earth. Since the dawn of the Nine Realms, the Seeds of the World Tree Yggdrasil have protected and nourished the land. Scattered and hidden throughout the realm the seeds now face threats from ancient evils and enemies of Asgard who seek to extinguish these flickering remnants of life. When these seeds are destroyed they will bring about the end of the world as known as Ragnarök. It is up to Viking heroes to protect these seeds.
Players take control of a glorious Viking hero in Valhalla called an Einherjar. These heroes are hand-picked by the Valkyries to protect the seeds and save Midgard. The game is designed to be played solo and in co-op with as many as nine other Einherjar. Challenges are automatically rebalanced based on one’s party size. Together players can bolster defenses, defeat monsters, venture into the unknown wilderness, and much more.
Eight different classes and numerous combat styles allow players to play their own gameplay style. The world is ever changing with its vast procedural generation that fills it with ancient relics, dangerous dungeons, and vicious enemy camps. Combat is presented in classic top-down fashion with an isometric look and feel that was built in a 3D environment. Crafting legendary gear and building structures will help in combat and traverse the terrain. Resources can be shared between companions.
A tribe’s might can be tested in one of two different game modes: a session-based Saga Mode and an endless Survival Mode. Saga Mode allows players to build, craft and fight their way to epic world bosses. This mode will receive seasonal updates that add new content. In Survival Mode players are thrown into a survival-focused sandbox that challenges players to defend against a constant flow of enemies that become stronger the longer they live.
Tribes of Midgard is the right kind of game for anyone who wants to test their Viking skills. People who want to play solo can face a great challenge on their own, and folks who want to play with friends will have a blast – we think we’ve found the perfect balance. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into this game, and what came out is a bright, lively world with engaging, class-based co-op combat that players can explore and survive together.
